Urinary incontinence is one of the most prevalent, untreated chronic conditions for individuals living in Canada. The impact of incontinence on an individual’s quality of life is significant as it negatively affects a person’s physical, psychological, sexual, social and overall quality of life (QOL). Due to the stigma associated with this condition, many individuals do not seek treatment for their incontinence, even though 80% of incontinence cases can be managed or cured.

The following policy brief has been commissioned by The Canadian Continence Foundation (TCCF) to help government address the unmet needs of Canadians living with incontinence. Incontinence is a chronic condition that continues to carry an enormous stigma. Incontinence can impact all parts of a
persons’ life: social interactions, sex life, ability to work, travel, play sports, and participate in community life.

In August 2006 the World Health Organization (WHO) established the WHO Intergovernmental Working Group on Public Health, Innovation and Intellectual Property (IGWG). The IGWG must deliver by May 2008 a “global strategy and plan of action” for boosting research and development (R&D) of medicines for non-prioritized or neglected diseases, predominantly found in developing countries.

This report from The Canadian Continence Foundation sheds light on a well kept secret – that as many as 3.3 million Canadians experience some form of incontinence. While the societal impacts are hard to quantify, the financial costs associated with urinary incontinence (UI) total an estimated $2.6 billion per year.
