Nearly two-thirds of Americans lack confidence in foreign manufactured prescription drugs. Despite this, lawmakers are considering making it easier to import foreign drugs. Of particular concern are medicines purchased on the internet – US citizens cannot be certain where the product is coming from, if it is real, safe and effective or who and where the drug was manufactured.

According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, personal health care expenditures, from 2002 to 2007, are projected to grow by 41 per cent. Institutional, physician and clinical services accounts for nearly 70% of us personal health spending growth over the past 5 years.

Patients need to have confidence in the quality, safety and effectiveness of their medicines. In developed countries, governments enact laws and regulations that provide stringent safeguards for drug approval, manufacturing, labelling and distribution.
